“Sweden: Socialist Paradise or Egalitarian Nightmare?” a Follow-Up

Leftists love citing countries like Sweden as proof that “democratic socialism” works. To set the record straight, I recently gave a campus talk, entitled “Sweden: Socialist Paradise or Egalitarian Nightmare?” at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

In my talk I explained:

  • Why Sweden became prosperous thanks to capitalism.
  • Why Sweden is not and never has been socialist.
  • Why oppressing Sweden’s most productive citizens with confiscatory taxes and threats of socialization led to economic decline.

Carl Svanberg at Emory University

For those of you who couldn’t make it, but nevertheless would like to know why it’s nonsensical to credit socialism for Sweden’s success, I recommend you to listen to my OCON 2013 course “What about Sweden?”:

This course dispels the myths about Sweden by exploring the economic history of Sweden from the 1800s onward. This course thereby provides you with the intellectual ammunition necessary to refute the notion that Sweden could, somehow, “get away” with the welfare state.
