Conflicts over free speech are becoming more and more common. This year has seen riots at U.C. Berkeley; an attack on speakers at Middlebury College; protesters blocking a talk at Claremont McKenna College; students taking over Evergreen State College; and protests of professor Jordan Peterson over his refusal to use gender-neutral pronouns. Off campus, we have seen violent clashes at political gatherings and protests by white supremacists over the removal of Confederate statues.

What is the cause of these incidents? What can we do to address them and to protect freedom of speech and the free society that depends on it?
